Stones in the Sand

by Jessica Taylor

John 8:1-11

Pious men with cruel faces
Clutching stones with jagged edges…
Fear, shame, flushed, shattered
Hot sand sticking to tear-stained cheeks…

Sinking, stumbling, standing, stricken
Pushing, shoving, cursing, condemning
Hissing breath and seething hatred
Unleashed fury against…who?

A woman caught in sin’s webbed snare
With no one to defend
Bound in the devil’s gruesome lair
Regret her worst fiend.

Suddenly a shadow falls
A shield from the blistering heat
Beckoning her with a gentle call
To rest and find relief.

Who condemns her at the cross
With crimes so dark and damning?
Let him without sin be the first to toss
The stone of judgment landing.

Then he knelt down in the sand
As he began to write
Bold strokes drawn by steady hands
Beyond their curious sight.

The woman waited
For stones soon thrown
Hushed and hated
But no longer alone.

Whispers taper to a hush
As thoughts of sin resounding
Make young and old feel the crush
Of their own heart’s guilty pounding.

Eyes fall as thoughts churn
Angry souls now hollow
The wizened are the first to turn
The young men soon to follow.

“Where have they gone?
Is there no one left?
To cast a stone
Against the adulteress?”

“Not one, kind sir…
They all are gone…”
“Then begone…
And sin no more.”

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Cor 5:21

“Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water. Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved for you are the one I praise…”Jeremiah 17:13-14

“The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread, and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall…”
Isaiah 8:13-14
